Once you realize that size() does matter, how do you handle it in Perl? Arrays are more compact -- and usually faster -- than hashes, but not always; undef doesn't actually free any memory; scoped storage trades setup time for static space.

Looking at the tradeoffs can leave you with some simple fixes for memory bloat, and might even leave your code running faster overall.
